There is plenty of activity in the ropax ferry and ro-ro market in response to rising shipping demand. Amongst the newest ferries to be put into service is the 36,250 gt (4700 dwt) STAR, operated by Tallink between Tallinn and Helsinki. With a service speed of 27 knots, the Aker-built ro-pax is the fastest ferry ever built for such a short crossing and will provide a 2h crossing time on the 45 n/m route.
The new ship is fitted with four MAK 12M43C medium-speed main engines with an output of 4 x 12,000 kW @ 514 rpm and the engines are coupled in pairs to two shafts with a speed of 145 rpm....
