The first quarter of 2008 has brought good and bad news for shippers and transportation companies operating in California - all related to air quality.
Last month, the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a Clean Trucks Programme aimed at slashing truck-related air pollution by 80% within four years. The programme allows employee drivers, independent contractors (so-called “owner-operators”) or a combination of employee and contractor drivers to work the port as they do currently, but for the first time, the industry will be required to meet clean truck, maintenance, security, and health insurance requirements. Commissioners also finalised a US$2B subsidy programme to finance the lease or purchase of clean trucks....
