Three of the biggest container handling equipment suppliers are publicly-listed in Europe. Their results provide “transparency” and emblematise the current downturn in the port and intermodal sectors.
A good place to start is Demag Cranes AG, as the first quarter of its 2008-2009 financial year is 4Q/ 08, when the downturn in container handling became apparent. The company notes that in 4Q/ 08 the World Economic Climate Index produced by the IFO World Economic Survey fell to its lowest level for more than 20 years. “This fall in the indicator is the result of an even gloomier view of the economic situation and lower expectations for the next six months,” notes Demag....
