The second half of the current year has seen a “mass arrival” of new cranes in Russian and other post-Soviet ports, as orders placed last year before the global crisis struck come to fruition. As an example, the Port of Sillamäe in Estonia started up its container terminal with two cranes and three 1 over 2 straddle carriers in September.
At the time of writing, only one crane is needed to handle the volume, but the port’s marketing director Andrey Birov is confident that demand will increase. The equipment was bought from Finnsteve Oy, which had operated it at Helsinki old port. When the port relocated to the new Vuosaari harbour the equipment was surplus to requirements as Finnsteve acquired new Kalmar cranes for its operation there....
