Wagons to go on RAFTS

Rail Ferry Transport Services Ltd (RAFTS) has obtained an EU Marco Polo grant of €2.5M towards creation of a “seamless” rail freight corridor to link middle and northern Britain with the Continent via a Hull-IJmuiden train ferry. An “east-west” rail freight corridor could cater for any kind of unitised or wagon freight, including hazardous cargoes.

The link is aimed at “replicating the through rail functionality” of the Channel Tunnel rail link. As traffic on this corridor has stagnated due to technical barriers, price issues and political problems, prospects for an alternative “rail bridge” may be brighter and, moreover, an IJmuiden gate would feed into the Betuwe Line due to open next year....
