It looks as though the New Panamax (NPX) limit for containerships will be around the 12,000 TEU mark, based on information released by Panama Canal Commission (ACP) in Panama City last month.
Should the project, that has been costed (optimistically?) at US$5.25B, get the “thumbs up” from the citizens of Panama in the forthcoming referendum, the new locks would have dimensions of 1400ft by 180ft (427m x 54.8m), with a depth of 18.3m. Allowing for 5ft margins each side for fenders, that means a ship width of 170ft (51.82m), or 20-wide deck stow, and ship length of ca. 424m....
