Falköping dry port on line

The new facility in Sweden is part of the EU Dryport programme

Skaraborg Logistic Center is the name of a new dry port being built in Falköping in Sweden, located about 75 miles north west of Gothenburg.

Being developed by Swedish partners as part of the EU Dryport programme, the facility could eventually cover 70-ha and serve as a rail-connected dry port for Gothenburg and other Swedish ports.

Rail links to the main rail network have been installed and signalling work is due to be completed later this year. Forest industry giant Stora Enso has opened a new, purpose-built terminal, bringing in timber by rail from western Sweden for onward distribution to its paper mills in the middle of the country.

Västra Götaland region, the lead partenr in Dryport, is working with industrial partners to continue development of the site. Phase 1 is geared to accommodate up to 60,000 m2 of warehousing and terminal buildings and work on phase 2 has already started.

The project was delayed by the financial downturn, but Falköping community’s development officer Leif Bigsten says that the signs are now very positive.

Referring to the upcoming privatisation of the container terminal in Gothenburg, Bigsten remarked: “We hope that the private company taking over [in Gothenburg] will see the business opportunities of using our dryport in the system.”
