DIPSSCOR ups reefer capacity

New reefer racks at Sasa Wharf
ICTSI subsidiary Davao Integrated Port Services & Stevedoring Corp (DIPSSCOR), which operates the Sasa Wharf at the Port of Davao in the Philippines, has doubled its reefer storage capacity from 144 to 288 units in response to a rapid increase in containerised banana exports.

Three new reefer racks have been constructed at the terminal, each equipped with 48 x 440v plugs complete with power supply stations, back-up 1.5 MVA power generators and 1.5 MVA step down transformers. Each rack accommodates six rows of containers stacked up to four tiers high on each side.

Growing reefer traffic has also seen two 45 ton capacity reach stackers added to the yard equipment park to complement the three RTGs that were commissioned last year when the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) turned over the operations of the Sasa Wharf reefer facility to DIPSSCOR.

The Philippines is the world’s third largest banana exporter and the largest in Asia. “Banana exports from the Philippines are mostly produced in Mindanao with Sasa Wharf as the key export port. Traders have been shifting the shipping of bananas from reefer ships to reefer containers, a more cost-efficient and safer way of transporting the fruit,” said DIPSSCOR general manager Julien Domingo.

“DIPSSCOR’s 70% container market share in the Port of Davao is largely the result of expanding global banana trade,” he added.
