Cargotec books automation deal in Los Angeles

TraPac, Inc is set to be the first customer for Kalmar automated stacking cranes in the US and the first worldwide for fully-robotised 1 over 1 shuttle carriers

The 17 "customer specific automatic shuttle carriers" to be supplied to Trapac, Mitsui OSK Lines' terminal operating affiliate in the US, are fully robotised machines (previously called "Autoshuttles" by Kalmar).

This is a "world first" in Los Angeles for this design (the Autostrads in Brisbane were supplied by PTS/Kalmar) and not just a "US first."

TraPac has also ordered 10 Kalmar automated stacking cranes (ASCs). All the equipment will be delivered in 2012 and 2013.

Trapac is thus set to be the first fully-automated container terminal in the USA, following ECT Delta and Euromax, CTA Hamburg, TCB Nagoya (all with AGVs) and Patrick Brisbane (with Autostrads).

This latest order for Cargotec follows hard of the heels of its order from DP World for Kalmar ASCs and manual shuttle carriers for London Gateway, for delivery during 2013.

Commenting on the TraPac order, Lennart Brelin, Cargotec's EVP, Americas said:  "Since 1990, we have steadily developed our track record in the field of port automation and this order would not have been achieved without our recent efforts in port automation.

"This is our first large automation order in the Americas region and it strengthens our position globally in port automation."
