Trieste-Luxembourg intermodal link

A new service for unaccompanied trailers has been started this week between the rail hub at Bettembourg and Italy's northernmost Adriatic port

Turkish o/d trailers for north western Europe are now being transferred to/from rail cars at Molo V (Pier 5), operated by Europa Multipurpose Terminals (EMT) in the Port of Trieste, for rail shipment to/from Bettembourg, the key hub in Luxembourg.

The service will be operated on a two pairs/week basis by Alpe Adria, the intermodal operator owned jointly by Trieste port authority (APT), Trenitalia and by Friulia Spa, the Treasury department of Italy's Friulia-Venezia region, in cooperation with Luxembourg Railways (CFL).

Trieste Molo VI is already connected by rail to Worms-am-Rhein (five pairs/week) and Karlsruhe (two pairs/week), by Kombiverkehr.

The new service has been faciliated by the extension of EMT's concession area and the availability of four (un)loading tracks. At the same time, ro-ro activity has increased since the Turkish call port was switched from Ambarli to Mersin. Trailer traffic increased 22% in 2011 and in 1H/2012 it increased by a further 18%.

EMT, which is part of  the long-established Trieste-based forwarding and transport company Francesco Parisi, has been quick to capitalise. The number of rail intermodal moves more than doubled in  2010-11 and increase by 46% in the first half of this year.
