MCI releases CA reefer film
Reefer container and machinery manufacturer Maersk Container Industry (MCI) has released an animated film that seeks to explain the simple and affordable technology behind the Star Cool controlled atmosphere (CA) system.
According to MCI, until a few years ago, it was not possible to transport bananas from growers in Ecuador to consumers in Azerbaijan except by air. The launch of Star Cool CA in 2009, however, saw potential travel time increase from 20 to 45 days. The new technology gave exporters in Ecuador access to banana consumers in Baku, Azerbaijan, while bananas from the Matanuska farm in Mozambique’s Nacala region could suddenly reach markets in Europe and Asia.
Four years on, more than 25,000 Star Cool CA reefers are in service around the world with several major reefer container lines in both Asia and Europe.
In addition to bananas, the new, animated Star Cool CA film is aimed at shippers of a wide range of high-respiring fruits and vegetables, including, avocados, asparagus and mango, and explains how the simple patented design removes excess CO2 generated during the biological respiration process and maintains the optimum O2/CO2/nitrogen composition in the container.
“We took a technology well known from other contexts and developed it further. Star Cool CA uses a permeable membrane and a vacuum pump to extract excess CO2 from the cargo,” says Gert Jorgensen, head of MCI’s research and development section.
The film acknowledges that acquisition and operation costs are important for the use of CA in new trades. “More customers will be able to use CA because the acquisition cost [of this system] is relatively low. They will also save money on operations as cost per trip is kept to a minimum,” says Anders G Holm of MCI sales and marketing.
The Star Cool CA animation follows a similar film about MCI’s automated ventilation system, AV+, which shows how AV+ controls the air intake in a reefer to save energy and to preserve cargo quality. The Star Cool CA film can be seen on MCI’s YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/QfhuVfoUl3g
