David Samson has resigned from his post as Chairman of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey. His decision to step down is the result of concerted political pressure in the wake of the "Bridgegate" road traffic scandal and press investigations into business conducted by clients of his law firm with the port authority. He is also reported to have lost the support of the Port Authority's Executive.There is no suggestion that Mr Samson has acted with personal impropriety, but there may be an Inquiry into the structure of the Port Authority to see whether it should remain a unitary authority with responsibility for so many aspects of citizens' lives.
Interim Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gary Lee Moore has announced that he will not apply for the permanent position. After an executive director is selected and in place, Moore will return to his duties as Los Angeles City Engineer.
Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGT) has announced the retirement of Kevin M Doherty as President and CEO. Mr. Doherty will take a seat on MGT’s Board and will be replaced by COO and CFO Michael Fratianni. Guy Desrosiers, currently Treasurer, will become CFO. Several other MGT veterans will assume senior management positions. Meguerditch “Migo” Kanondjian will become VP, Operations, Daniel Boyer will become VP, Maintenance and Engineering, and Frédéric Provost will become VP, Risk Management.
The Supervisory Board of the Port of Marseilles Authority has formally validated the position of Christine Cabau-Woehrel as President of the port's Management Board. Mme Cabau-Woehrel's transfer from the same position in Dunkirk was previously reported in this regula column. In addition, Chantal Helman, the port's Finance Director, has been appointed to the Management Board. Other new posts will be confirmed later.
Paul J Cozza, formerly with Maersk Line, has been appointed Executive Director of North Carolina State Ports Authority (Source: ITZ).
Florida Governor Rick Scott has appointed Gregory Celestan as the newest commissioner for the Port of Tampa Bay, for a four-year term. Commissioner Patrick H Allman III has been reappointed to the Board of Commissioners for the Port of Tampa Bay for another four-year term ending Feb. 6, 2018. Allman has sat on the seven-member board at Tampa since August 2011.
HES Beheer will propose Dilia van der Heem as new member of its Supervisory Board at the AGM on 21 May. The nomination was made by the Works Councils of two HES affiliates, dry bulk operators OBA and EBS, in line with their right to recommend one third of the Board members. Workers with HES Beheer’s various bulk stevedores are still not at all comfortable with the Heysta Energy takeover now being (re)negotiated. Mrs Van der Heem is a former FNV trade union regional leader, a former Member of Parliament and former member of the Rotterdam town council, and has been a public prosecutor for 15 years. Meanwhile, HES is "head hunting" for a new CEO to succeed Harmen Sliep. Once that person is appointed, Sliep’s interim successor Kees Molenaar will return to the Supervisory Board which today officially has just one member, Ben Vree of APM Terminals.
Konecranes has appointed Ryan Flynn as EVP, Equipment. He joins Konecranes from BlueScope Steel, although was previously with Konecranes, NEA and APAC.
Michael Dempsey has left his position as General Manager, Ports and Terminals at Identec to become Vice President, Sales and Marketing at wireless asset monitoring specialist WAM Technologies, LLC. WAM Technologies is a partner firm to Identec in the intermodal asset tracking market.
Tobias Laxa was recently appointed Group Marketing Manager of Unicarriers Europe GmbH, the name that the Atlas, Nissan Forklift and TCM (Toyo Umpanki) brands have been trading under since their merger in 2012. He was previously with Kardex Deutschland and CHEP Germany. The post is based in Meerbusch, Germany.
NDC Infrared Engineering, based in Irwindale, California, has appointed Karl Schmid as Director of Customer Care, EMEA for its Sensors, Systems and Metals Divisions. He joins the company from Voith Paper.
As of June 1, 2014 Thorsten Meincke will return to the Kuehne & Nagel Group to join the global seafreight management team. Prior to his most recent role as member of the Management Board of a Swiss forwarding company, Thorsten Meincke was Senior Vice President Global Sales & Marketing at Kuehne + Nagel. He is rejoining K & N having stepped down from his post as director of seafrieght, airfreight and IT with another Switzerland-based forwarder, M&M Militzer & Münch International Holding AG.
Kansas City Southern Railway Company has promoted M Christopher Mitchell from Director, Locomotive Utilization to AVP, System Mechanical. The post is based in Kansas City, Mo.
The Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI) at the University of Denver, Colorado has appointed William J DeWitt III, PhD, as its Executive Director of the ITI.
