Germany: Former Federal Minister Ronald Pofalla (CDU), who us also a former Chief of Staff of Chancellor Angela Merkel, has joined the Board of Deutsche Bahn AG as its chief lobbyist. The news was leaked over one year ago, but there was an outcry about the "paper walls" separating politics and big business, particularly as DB remains largely state-owned. This led to a one year "grace period."
Two Port Commissioners of the Port of Houston Authority have been reappointed. Clyde Fitzgerald was reappointed by Harris County Commissioners Court, and Roy Mease was reappointed by the City of Pasadena. Port Commissioners serve two-year terms without pay. Harris County Commissioners Court also acted to extend Port Commissioner John D Kennedy's current term to February 1, 2016.
Industry Veteran Eric Sisco has retired from APM Terminals, where he more recently held the position of North America Portfolio Manager. He had been associated with the Maersk Organization since 1978, initially as outside legal counsel before joining the Maersk Group's container business.
Matías Machiandiarena has stepped down as head of Argentina's Consorcio Portuario Regional Mar del Plata after a period of two years. He is replaced by Jorge Hidalgo, who was appointed as president of the port authority by state governor Daniel Scioli. Machiandiarena was responsible for undertaking a major dredging programme. Previously, the main access channel had become totally inoperative, effectively preventing large ships from reaching the port.
Antofagasta Terminal Internacional has appointed Felipe Barison Kahn as its new general manager. He replaces Gastón Bastías, who stepped aside in the hope that a new appointment could end a nine day strike by stevedores. Barison has worked in the port sector for the last 23 years, having been general manager of San Vicente Terminal Internacional for 14 years. Recently, he was in charge of SAAM's Logística Chile division.
International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has announced the appointment of Anders Dommestrup as Chief Executive Officer of its Australian subsidiary, Victoria International Container Terminal Ltd at Webb Dock East in the Port of Melbourne. Dommestrup was most recently COO of Modern Terminals Ltd and before that was with APM Terminals.
David Robinson, CEO of PD Ports, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to international trade and the UK economy. Robinson was appointed chief executive officer of PD Ports in 2006 after joining the Company in 2002 as managing director of PD Teesport.
Dr Ulrich Bauermeister retired as Managing Director of HERO (Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH) at the end of 2014 and has been replaced by Jens Aurel Schorner and Dr Gernot Tesch. Bauermeister, who formerly held a senior position in the Hamburg ministry for economic affairs, joined HERO as managing director in early 2000. Schorner comes from TT-Line, where he was Managing Director, while Tesch was Joint Managing Director of Scandlines.
Juan J Flores, recently the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) State Freight, Logistics and Passenger Operations Administrator, has joined Broward County’s Port Everglades as the Assistant to the Port Director for Intermodal Programs, a new position reporting to Chief Executive & Port Director Steven Cernak.
The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) has announced its 2015 Board of Directors and new officers. Katie Farmer, group vice president, consumer products of BNSF Railway, was elected Association Chairman, replacing Phil Shook, director of intermodal at C H Robinson, who remains on the board and the Executive Committee as the immediate past chairman. Adriene B Bailey, vice president of strategic businesses development for the transportation division at Yusen Logistics (Americas), Inc, was elected Vice Chairman of the association and Kevin Lhotak, president of Reliable Transportation Specialists, Inc is Treasurer for the 2015 membership year. IANA members also elected four directors to serve three-year terms: Jeffrey R Brashares, senior vice president, Sales and National Accounts, TTS, LLC; David W Manning, president, TCW, Inc; James I Newsome III, president and chief executive officer, South Carolina Ports Authority; and Garry Old, president and chief executive officer, COFC Logistics, LLC.

Following the recent announcement that Roger Williams, the longstanding CEO of the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) is to hand over his current role in mid-January 2015, the name of his successor has been released. He is Peter Ward, until recently Commercial Director and Head of Cargo Supply Chain at London Gateway. Ward has over 30 years’ experience in international transportation and logistics . Former posts include Director, Europe of P&O Nedlloyd Logistics, and Managing Director of the International Supply Chain division at Wincanton Group.
