Richard Vallihu has replaced Tau Morwe as the chief executive of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). As already reported by this column, in March Morwe unexpectedly announced that he would retire at the end of April. No reason was given for his departure, but he actually left his post at the end of March, triggering new appointments at the top of the company. Vallihu had previously been chief executive of Transnet Engineering, where he had been in charge for 10 years. Transnet Engineering was previously a fairly minor offshoot of state owned transport utility Transnet but it now operates as a commercially viable engineering firm with interests both inside and beyond the rail industry. The division will now be run by Thamsanqa Jiyane, who was previously head of procurement at TNPA and Transnet Freight Rail. Jiyane and Vallihu have both promoted local manufacturing and procurement strategies in the company.
