Transnet and GE joint venture

South African rail utility Transnet and US engineering giant GE have agreed to jointly develop a digital system covering all cargo on the continent

The digitisation will be based on Predix, the operating system for GE’s Industrial Internet. It is designed to digitise all payments, customs procedures and cargo inspection, thereby cutting costs and speeding up transit.

The system will be targeted at shipping lines, haulage companies and railways, making it “easier for a company to understand pricing and capacity on the network, plan a shipment, and get their goods to market”.

Chairman and CEO of GE, Jeff Immelt, said: “This planned digital partnership with Transnet will be another step forward in how we can work together to improve Africa’s transport sector; delivering efficiency and productivity.”

Announcing the agreement, the two partners stated that Africa’s intra-continental trade had “nearly doubled since 1995."

However, this does not seem to be a big increase over such a long period, particularly given the low level of intra-African trade 22 years ago, and highlights the scale of the challenges facing logistics operations on the continent.

Transnet Group CEO Siyabonga Gama commented: “The cost of moving goods from point A to point B is very high and it is passed on to the end customer, impeding Africa’s ability to be competitive in pricing.”

In 2014, Transnet and GE signed a deal to jointly manufacture locomotives in South Africa for Transnet’s own use and marketing to the rest of the continent.
