Tesla’s for terminals?

DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have met in Dubai to discuss Tesla’s technology in port applications.

DP World announced that the meeting, which took place at the World Government Summit in Dubai, focused on “the use of Tesla battery solutions for renewable energy storage in the global trade enabler’s ports and terminals in the fast growing markets of Africa, India and Latin America".

“The company’s 77 marine and inland terminals in 40 countries form one of the most diverse and comprehensive operational networks in the world. Mr. Bin Sulayem is now also exploring possible implementations of Tesla’s state-of-the-art technology to further enhance DP World’s impact on global trade," DP World stated.

The most obvious application for Tesla battery systems is in the AGVs at Rotterdam World Gateway, in which DP World is a shareholder. DP World said several other terminals “are in the process of implementing the new technology.”

Tesla used the summit to announce a regional headquarters in Dubai, which the port operator said “complements DP World’s vision to adopt innovative and sustainable transport solutions across its portfolio.”

“As a global trade enabler, we think ahead, foresee change and prepare for it,” said DP World Bin Sulayem. “Mr. Musk’s vision to revolutionise transportation holds tremendous potential for enhancing our operational efficiencies and ensuring the smoother and faster movement of goods. It also resonates with our vision to lead the future of world trade and to do so in a sustainable manner so that we leave a legacy we can be proud of.

“Our visionary leadership has taught us to anticipate change and this is what has led to our success as well as the rapid development of the UAE into the global business hub that it is today. Mr. Musk is at the forefront of enabling sustainable transport and energy use solutions, which is integral to our goal of protecting our environment and building a vibrant and resilient society.”
