HPH Trust down 6%

Container Volume fell last year at terminals in both Hong Kong and Shenzhen

HPH Trust reports that 2016 full year throughput of at its deep-water ports was 6% below 2015. The combined throughput of HIT, COSCO-HIT and ACT in Hong Kong fell 8% to 10.8M TEU, while YICT in Yantian fell 4% to 11.69M TEU.

“Although outbound cargoes to US and EU gained momentum in 2016 with faster growth rate in Q4 2016, YICT’s throughput in 2016 declined as a result of decrease in transshipment cargoes and empties. HIT’s throughput suffered as a result of weaker Intra-Asia and transshipment cargoes,” HPH Trust said in a statement.
Revenue and other income for 2016 was HK$11,912.3M, down 6% or HK$700.5M on last year.

Uncertainty is the main theme from HPH Trust’s outlook for 2017, with the ramifications of the new US administration’s trade policies still unclear and a slow pace of growth in Europe. The Trust also expects ongoing impact from consolidation in the liner industry, and noted “The service rationalisation of various global shipping alliances has negatively impacted the transshipment volume of both HIT and YICT in 2016.”

Despite the difficulties, it expects to continue to be well positioned to meet industry challenges, due to the “natural deep-water channels and unparalleled mega-vessel handling capabilities” at its facilities, and a cooperation agreement in Hong Kong driving operational efficiencies. Hong Kong terminals including HIT, CHT and ACT entered into a co-management agreement in December to collaborate to efficiently manage the operations of the 16 berths across Terminals 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 in Kwai Tsing.

Overall, however, HPH Trust said “Given the uncertainty around global trade outlook, management remains cautious on the expected cargo volume for 2017 and will continue to focus on better cost control through improvements in productivity and efficiency.”
