Antwerp Saeftinghedok - further setback

Belgium’s supreme national body, the Council of State (Raad van State) has annulled what was left of the (Town and Country Planning) plan for the Saeftinghedok that Antwerp wants to realise

Following its previous ruling on 20th December 2016 annulling most of the plan specifically in relation to the planned graven Saeftinghedok, Raad van State has now also spoken out about the other legal elements of such a major environmental project.

In brief, it has now also annulled the expropriation clause in the plan entered by Flanders Province and the Port of Antwerp. The pieces of land vital for the planned new dock and its surrounding infrastructure to be developed, have now been returned their original designationfor mainly agricultural use.

A spokesman for the public project team has said the government of Flanders will study the council’s verdict and quickly seek consultation with the scheme's opponents.

Antwerp wants to create a 5M/year TEU dock on the River Scheldt’s left bank (west bank) just north of the Deurganckdok, from 2021.
