  • The former ship owner, founder and chairman of Beluga Shipping, Bremen Niels Stolberg, may face a custodial sentence of up to five years as a result of legal actions following the company's bankruptcy six years ago. In February this year the trial had to be discontinued due to Mr Stolberg's poor health. Prosecution and Defence council are negotiating a sentence with the court. Mr. Stolberg is accused of breach of fiduciary duty, balance forgery and credit fraud. Three former Beluga managers are expected to receive a fine on probation. The defence argues that Mr Stolberg should also receive a fine on probation as he has already suffered with his cancer illness. The final court meeting with the respective statements and the judgment are expected in July.
  • We regret to report the death (on 28th May) of Willem Karel Scholten, a former CEO of Rotterdam Port Authority at the age of 73. Scholten's career spiralled downwards following the 2010 scandal in which he had issued unauthorised bank guarantees to the tune of €200M to entrepreneur Joep van den Nieuwenhuyzen, although in the event both men avoided a custodial sentence. Before joining the port, Scholten had been CEO of Smit Internationale, a company where he had served as ship’s officer and master.
