New Gottwald for Portsmouth UK

MMD Shipping's new crane
MMD Shipping, the stevedoring arm of Portsmouth International Port, recently acquired a new Gottwald mobile harbour crane from Konecranes for £2.1M

The crane is understood to be a 2-rope model 6 crane in the G HMK 6507 variant, with a maximum hook capacity of 125t and a maximum outreach of 51m. As such it is MMD's biggest MHC. Up to now the port's biggest MHC is a 46m outreach, 100t maximum capacity crane.

The new crane was put into operation at the end of May. Due to the date of manufacturing the structures, it sports the Terex eggshell white colours and bears the Terex Gottwald logo.

MMD reported last year that it was reconsidering its line-up of MHCs in the light of the Maersk Caribbean bananas service deploying 2500 TEU ships (WorldCargo News, March 2016, p7). The new crane replaces two older MHCs, Nos 1 and 2, which are no longer adequate for today's market.

From MMD's perspective, many customers importing fresh produce into the UK through Portsmouth have moved from palletized breakbulk shipments to containerised loads, so it needed to boost further its laden container handling capacity. Companies such as Maersk, Fyffes and Geest Line already use the port for the majority of their UK fruit imports. Local council-owned MMD currently handles 70% of all bananas consumed in the UK.

Mike Sellers, Port Director at Portsmouth International Port, said: “Continued investment and improvements will help Portsmouth International Port maintain its status as a key destination for imports of fresh produce from all over the world.”

  • Noatum Terminal Castellón, part of Noatum Ports in Spain, has recently acquired a 4-rope model 6 Gottwald crane from Konecranes, mainly for bulk handling duties. This operation is not part of the Noatum Ports' assets being acquired by Cosco.
