ICTSI posts H1 2017 profits and throughput rises

In H1 2017 Manila-based GTO ICTSI posted revenue from port operations of US$603.7M (+10% y-o-y)and handled 4.545M TEU (+ 7% y-o-y)

EBITDA came to US$289.7M (+ 13% y-o-y) and net income attributable to equity holders came to US$103.6M (up 19% y-o-y) due to the continuing ramp-up at the new terminal in Matadi, DRC, strong operating income contribution from the terminals in Iraq, Mexico and Brazil, and the one-time gain on the termination of the sub-concession agreement in Nigeria [Lekki].

The increase in net income was tapered by higher interest and financing charges; higher depreciation and amortization expenses; start-up costs in Melbourne Australia; and increase in the share in the net loss at SPIA, the JV with PSA International in Buenaventura, Colombia, which increased from US$3.2M in H1 2016 to US$18.7M in 2017 as the company started full commercial operations at the beginning of the year.

The increase in TEU throughput, says ICTSI, was primarily due to continuing improvement in global trade activities particularly in the emerging markets, continuing ramp-up at operations in Basra, new services at Manzanillo (Mexico) and the new terminals in Matadi and Melbourne Excluding these consolidated volume increased by 5%.

However, volume growth slowed to just 3% in Q2 2017 measured y-o-y, to 2.273M TEU. In Q2 net income attributable to equity holders was up 15% y-o-y to US$51.9M. However, says ICTSI, if the one-time gain on the Lekki termination is excluded, the Q2 net income would have fallen by 2% to US$45.1M, so the one-off gain was US$6.89M

Capital expenditure for the first half of 2017 amounted to US$71M, around 30% of the US$240M capital expenditure budget for the full year 2017.
