Konecranes delivers for CSX Railroad

The SMV 52 GC3S railroad sideloader
CSX Intermodal Terminals (CSXIT) will have a total of 27 Konecranes liftrucks in its fleet by the end of 2017.

A wholly owned subsidiary of CSX Corporation, CSXIT has, since August, taken delivery of eight new machines to add to its existing fleet of 16 Konecranes litrucks, and in December 2017 these will joined by another there new units.

“The first delivery consists of two SMV 52 GC3S railroad sideloaders, five SMV 4535 TC5 reach stacker trucks and one SMV 4543 TCX5 reach stacker. The order scheduled for delivery in December consists of another three SMV 4535 TCX5 reach stackers,” Konecranes stated. 

The two “railroad sideloaders”, are laden container handlers (or top picks as they are known in the US) with piggyback spreaders for handling trailer on flat car (TOFC) operations. “The new machines come with the new ELME 878 folding leg attachments for handling trailers from an extended 40 feet/12-meter position. The R/R sideloaders are a new project that Konecranes has developed with CSXIT, working to meet the exact design requirements of the US rail market,” Konecranes stated.

This is an interesting development. Though US railroads have for years handled TOFC lifts, trailers do not fit so easily from an equipment perspective into the grounded operation CSX (and other US Railroads) are adopting for some of their larger terminals using gantry cranes. 

The reachstackers feature third row capability with and without support jacks. “The SMV 4543 TCX5 is Konecranes’ top of the range reach stacker and can lift up to 99200 lb/45 tons, 5 containers high on the first row, and up to 55115 lb/25 tons, 3 rows deep. In addition, the reach stackers front support jacks can be engaged to increase stability, effectively raising the lift capacity on the second row to 97000 lb/44 tons, and 66000 lb/30 tons on the third row,” Konecranes stated.
