Finnlines shuffles the pack

FINNSWAN (formerly NORDLINK) will be operated in the Naantali-Långnäs-Kapellskär service as, says the ro-pax operator, “improvements in customer service continue”

Slotting EUROPALINK into the Malmö-Travemünde route will trigger reshuffling in Finnlines' fleet. At the end of April, a Star class vessel, NORDLINK from the Malmö–Travemünde route, will be redeployed on Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route.

The name of the vessel has been changed from NORDLINK to FINNSWAN and she now sails under the Finnish flag. FINNSWAN will be one of the first ships of this length and cargo capacity to operate between Finland and Sweden, stated Finnlines.

Before transferring to the Finland-Sweden trade, FINNSWAN will undergo refurbishment to improve passenger facilities. The lounge areas will be expanded and the tax-free shop and restaurant area will be refurbished.

FINNSWAN was built in 2007 and can accommodate 554 passengers, with 4,215 lane metres for cars and rolling cargo. “FINNSWAN, with its large cargo capacity, enables us to offer more space on those departures where we experience the biggest demand,” said Tom Pippingsköld, CFO of Finnlines.

Finnlines sold EUROPALINK to the Grimaldi parent group in 2013 because of insufficient volumes in the Baltic. Growth forecasts were revised downwards following the 2008-09 crisis and some routes were overtonnaged. Since then, however, volume trends have reversed, and the vessel is needed again for the Sweden-Germany trade.
