CMA CGM launches 40ft flexitanks for reefers
Shipping line launches “REEFLEX” for carrying up to 24,000 litres of liquids in 40ft reefer containers
|CMA CGM plans to use flexitanks in 40ft reefers|
CMA CGM claims to be the second largest reefer carrier in the world, and it has expanded its service offering to include liquid cargo in a flexitank system. Its temperature controlled system is called “REEFLEX”, and was developed in partnership with Teconja, a German expert in juices, and Liqua, an expert in packaging solutions for the transportation of liquids.
Liqua is headquartered in Turkey, and had earlier developed an “R-Flex 20” 20ft reefer flexitank for transporting liquids in reefer containers. It has also developed an “R-Flex 40ft” version of the flexitank exclusively for CMA CGM.
“REEFLEX allows for the transportation of liquids (juices, milk, compotes, syrup and all kind of oils) in a single bag with a capacity ranging from 12,000 to 24,000 litres. Available on Reefer containers of 40 feet, REEFLEX is installed in just 3 minutes. Thanks to its external pumping system, the bag is filled and emptied in 35 minutes thanks to its adapted design. REEFLEX represents an ideal alternative to break bulk and it will allow exporters and importers to carry their goods by containers, thus improving the conditions of transportation and delivery,” CMA CGM stated.
Using flextanks inside a reefer container enables the cargo to be maintained to a precise temperature between -35°C and +20°C. CMA CGM also notes that the flexitanks are recyclable, meet “the highest level of hygienic and safety constraints”, and can be filled an emptied without a person needing to be present.
There is an ongoing debate, however, about the use of flexitanks in containers, and in particular the damage they can cause to containers as the side walls are bulged out by the pressure from liquid cargo. In fact some carriers do not allow flexitanks in 40ft containers at all. Liqua claims to have overcome these concerns with a design that restains the liner bag, so it does not touch the sides of the containers, or require a bulkhead to be fitted at the doors.
Commenting on the launch of REEFLEX at the FRUIT LOGISTICA event in Berlin, Eric Legros, Deputy Vice President Reefer, declared: “CMA CGM owns one of the largest and most modern Reefer fleet in the world. A pioneer with Aquaviva, a unique solution for the transportation of lobsters and shellfish, the Group continues to innovate with the introduction of REEFLEX, a state-of-the-art technology for an optimal transportation of liquids.”
