Joint Asia-Middle East multipurpose service

Hyundai Merchant Marine and Austral Asia Line have signed an agreement for a joint multipurpose service between the Far East and Middle East

The Korean carrier will initially provide four geared multi-purpose vessels, later this year to be increased to six, while Singapore AAL will deploy two of its A- Class vessels in the service. All the ships are in the 30,000-31,000dwt range. It is planned to add a seventh vessel in 2019.

The new service is aimed at project cargoes and outsize cargoes including EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) shipments. The parties will market the service independently.

The rotations will connect China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore with the Middle East via the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.

Namir Khanbabi, Director, Chartering and Operations at AAL, said: "AAL has run successful MPV liner services between Asia and its key trade partners for more than 20 years. By pooling our resources with HMM, we can each offer more comprehensive service portfolios with improved frequency, capacity, coverage and economies of scale for our customers.

"There is no collaboration of pricing and we will each pursue bookings under our own respective brands with separate commercial teams and Bills of Lading."

Seung-il Park, General Manager of HMM, stated: "We established a leading position with Korea’s dynamic energy and infrastructure industries, operating regular multipurpose sailings between Asia and the West. These same customers can now take advantage of the new service we are starting with AAL."
