Babcock International Group (BIG), the UK MoD’s logistic services contractor at the Royal Navy’s Devonport Royal Dockyard and Naval Base in Plymouth, is using the Hyster Tracker fleet management telematics system, supplied through Briggs Equipment, to help manage 80 Hyster FLTs and other trucks operated on a multi-shift basis across the site.
“Our trucks have diverse roles across the site, as we have almost every type of materials handling operation here, from ship maintenance to logistical ship support,” said Mark Jackson, BIG’s logistics manager. “Hyster Tracker has automated control of our fleet, helping to support our existing processes, which focus on safety and efficiency.”
BIG’s fleet includes warehouse equipment of various types, and IC FLTs up to 12t lift capacity. Although many drivers are multi-skilled, Hyster Tracker ensures that only appropriately trained drivers can use particular types of equipment by presenting their RFID site security/ID card.
The system transmits a range of data from the trucks via GSM, which can be accessed via a secure online portal. The portal creates customisable reports, tables and graphical data, to help managers enhance productivity, control costs and optimise fleet utilisation.
“We can see trends and peaks,” said Mark Jackson. “Some trucks are used less frequently for specialised operations, and the reporting helps us to manage asset decisions according to over or under-utilisation.”
The system can enforce preshift safety checks, requiring the operator to complete a series of verifications on a control panel before a truck can be started. In the event of collision damage, automated email alerts are generated to help with subsequent investigation. The system also includes an idle shutdown function to power off trucks after a pre-determined amount of time.
