100 up for Liebherr MHCs in Spain

Spain is now the third country in the world, alongside Russia and India, with a fleet of 100 or more Liebherr mobile harbour cranes. The first Liebherr MHC supplied to Spain in 1992 was a LHM 1300, that is still in operation.

The picture shows the recent handover ceremony at El Musel. L to R: Javier Guardado, Managing Director, Marítima del Principado; Gabriel del Toro, President, Marítima del Principado; Jorge Rodríguez, Board Member, Marítima del Principado; Juan Carlos Jiménez, Divisional Manager Maritime Cranes, Liebherr Ibérica; and Andreas Mueller, Sales Director Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes

Andreas Mueller said: “Today the population of mobile harbour cranes in Spain is at a high level of 179 machines in total. We at Liebherr maritime cranes are very proud to have achieved a market share of more than 55%. The great trust customers have in our products and services shows that our company philosophy is also accepted in Spain.”

The new crane is in the 4-rope variant, aimed mainly at handling dry bulk. In bulk mode it will be paired with a 37 m3 grab, making it one of the highest capacity bulk handlers in Spain.

Marítima del Principado is aiming to reduce dwell times for vessels bringing in coal from Africa, the Nordic countries and Russia, as well as cater for larger ships more generally.

The company has requested a 46,000 m2 area at the back of the Marcelino León dock, the Port of Gijón’s expansion zone. This will allow it to boost coal storage capacity to 0.5 Mt and offer added-value services such as grading, screening and grinding.

In hook mode the crane is expected handle exports of heavy and outsize capital goods for the energy, mining and oill & gas sectors built locally by Duro Felguera, a key port customer. The LHM 600 is the second biggest crane in the Liebherr MHC range, and a 4-rope version has a lift capacity on the ropes of 208 tons at 12m-17m outreach so around 203 tons under rotator/hook. Capacity exceeds 100 tons as far out as 34m outreach and is almost 48 tons at maximum 58m outreach.
