2009 marks the end of a very expansionist decade for the dry freight container manufacturing sector. It has also undergone significant streamlining and reshaping over the past 10 years and is today very different in character to the smaller, more fragmented industry of the 1990s.

The current number of participants is few fewer, while they are almost exclusively located in China and better able to control the situation than in past years. That much is demonstrated by their collective reaction to the current downturn – the worst on record – with factories opting to stay closed rather than produce speculatively and cut prices to generate business at any cost.
