Cargo ship sinks off Romania coast, three crew members missing
Search is underway for the missing crew of the sunken cargo ship Mohammed Z in the Black Sea, with 8 rescued, and 3 Syrians still missing.
Search efforts are underway for three missing crew members of the cargo ship Tanzania-flagged Mohammed Z, which sank off the Black Sea coast.
Early Saturday, Romanian officials were notified that the ship had sunk 26 nautical miles from Romania’s Danube village of Sfantu Gheorghe, Reuters reported.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), border police, and two nearby commercial vessels are involved in the search and rescue operation.
The ship had eleven crew members on board, including nine Syrians and two Egyptians. Eight were rescued by the commercial vessel Michel, which was nearest to the accident site, under the coordination of MRCC.
Efforts continue to find the remaining three missing crew members, all of whom are Syrian.
The reason for the ship’s sinking is still unclear.
At the time of the accident, the vessel was sailing from Mersin (Turkey) to Sulina (Romania). Mohammed Z (IMO: 8805078) is a general cargo ship built in 1988, with an LOA of 79.7 meters and a width of 13.37 meters.
