This weekend, European shortsea specialist CLdN unveiled a new access gate at its Purfleet terminal in London, UK, marking the completion of a multimillion-pound project over two years. The upgraded access, situated to the east of the terminal, aims to alleviate traffic congestion on London Road by redirecting terminal traffic away from residential areas. The project features a new access road, a roundabout, advanced freight access gates with an automated trailer inspection system, and enhanced internal access roads.

“We are delighted with the outcome of this project. It’s a real win-win as it brings benefits to the local community and to CLdN. It demonstrates our willingness and ability to invest in state-of-the-art port infrastructure and we will continue to invest in the future of the port. I would like to thank all the colleagues who were involved in the project, our partners ISC Contracting and Essex Electrical Services as well as the local authorities here in Thurrock,” Nigel Castle, Head of CLdN Ports UK said.

CLdN’s London terminal at Purfleet is strategically situated on the River Thames and serves as a major gateway for the Greater London area. It features two lock-free RoRo berths and 66 hectares of adjoining freehold infrastructure. The move is being announced on the back of CldN’s multimillion-pound investment in its Brocklebank terminal at the Port of Liverpool.

CLdN owns and operates terminals in five ports in Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK, including Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, Vlissingen, Killingholme, and London. In March this year, the company acquired 100% of the shares in Broekman Distriport Real Estate BV and its 100% subsidiary Broekman Distriport BV. Distriport occupies a 22-hectare site on the opposite side of Brittanniëhaven from CLdN’s existing Rotterdam terminal. The company hopes the move will offer it the scope to grow and diversify its service offering in all three segments currently served at Distriport: RoRo, LoLo, and breakbulk handling.
