EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven puts into operation two new remote-controlled double trolley STS cranes.
EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven (CTW) has commissioned two new STS cranes featuring remote control technology. The crane inauguration ceremony, attended by Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Olaf Lies, was held on August 5.
The remote-controlled double trolley cranes were ordered from Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd in January 2023. The crane manufacturer described the order at the time as “the first order of its type” for the company. The cranes are also the first double-trolley container cranes for CTW and will be used to handle the world’s largest container vessels.
The cranes have a 73-meter outreach, a lift height of 54.5 meters, and a span of 30.48 meters. They operate with a primary trolley for automatic container handling and a secondary trolley for transferring containers to the landside. Currently CTW operates a straddle carrier system for yard handling, but it is planning to migrate to yard gantry cranes and AGVs.
Recent years have seen Liebherr supply over twenty STS cranes to Eurogate Terminals in Germany as well as eight STS to Tanger Alliance in Morocco, where Eurogate is a shareholder.
