As the G5-class vessel deliveries near completion, Grimaldi Group has launched the construction of its ammonia-ready PCTC fleet in China.

Italian shipowner Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the fifth G5 class multipurpose ro-ro vessel, Great Casablanca, from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea. Great Casablanca is part of a six-vessel series and it is intended for Grimaldi’s maritime transport services between Northern Europe and West Africa. The new RoRo is scheduled to start operating in October.

The 250-meter-long and 38-meter-wide vessel with a deadweight of 45,684 tonnes can transport 4,700 linear meters of rolling freight, 2,500 car equivalent units (CEU), and 2,000 TEU of containers. While maintaining the same capacity for rolling freight as the previous G4-class, its container capacity has doubled.

G5 vessels are equipped for cold ironing, utilising shoreside electricity to replace fossil fuel consumption during port stays. Furthermore, the ships’ energy efficiency is enhanced with low-friction coatings, while hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems are installed to mitigate sulphur and particulate emissions. According to Grimaldi, energy efficiency solutions fitted on the vessel enable a reduction of CO2 emissions per tonne transported of up to 43% compared to other Grimaldi con-ro multipurpose ships.

As the delivery of the G5-class vessels nears a close, Grimaldi Group has launched the construction of its ammonia-ready PCTC (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) fleet in China. The steel cutting ceremony for the first of seven vessels, Grande Tianjin, took place on July 18th at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) shipyard. These PCTCs will feature advanced electronic engines with low fuel consumption and emission reduction systems, Grimaldi said, meeting strict international standards for CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions. The newbuilds are designed for cold ironing and will have the ammonia-ready class notation from RINA, which means that the ships are prepared for future conversion to zero-carbon ammonia fuel. Grimaldi Group has ordered a total of 17 ammonia-ready PCTC vessels as part of its fleet renewal plan.
