The route could also connect to the Arctic Sea by 2026, using the Irtysh and Ob rivers. A new port in Tugyl and a 100-kilometre railway to China are key parts of the project.
Estimates suggest that between 2 and 2.5 million tonnes of freight could be handled annually on this new route, according to Caspian News. Meanwhile, The Times of Central Asia forecasts that the route could increase freight volumes by as much as 3.6 million tonnes per year.
The country aims to complete the project by 2026, involving significant infrastructure upgrades, including a new hydraulic structure and improved barge and rail facilities.
