A.P. Moller Maersk christened its third dual-fuel, methanol-capable container vessel, Antonia Maersk, in Aarhus, Denmark.
A.P. Moller Maersk has added the third large dual-fuel, methanol-capable container vessel to its fleet. The ship, named Antonia Maersk, was officially christened during a ceremony in Aarhus, Denmark, on 9 August.
The 350-metre-long container vessel, with a capacity of 16,592 TEU, was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. It has a beam of 53.5 metres, a draught of 18 metres, and can accommodate 30 crew members.
Like its sister ships, Ane Maersk and Astrid Maersk, this new vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine from MAN Energy Solutions, capable of running on green methanol.
Following the tradition of naming Maersk vessels after members of the founding family, Antonia Maersk is named in honour of Antonia Uggla, the granddaughter of Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, Chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and its investment firm, A.P. Moller Holding, the majority owner of A.P. Moller – Maersk.
Antonia Maersk is the third of 18 large methanol-capable vessels scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025, which aligns with the company’s commitment to reducing operational emissions and achieving “net zero” GHG emissions by 2040.
The next methanol-capable container ship in Maersk’s fleet is set to be named by sportswear company Nike at the Port of Los Angeles on 27 August 2024.
