Kalmar has delivered 16 hybrid straddle carriers to the Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT) in Italy’s Port of Gioia Tauro. The straddle carriers, powered by both diesel and electric, arrived on Spliethoff’s multipurpose Fagelgrachtare earlier this week.

The investment is part of a broader modernisation effort by MSC’s Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), which acquired the Med Center Container Terminal (MCT) in 2019. The two companies have been long-standing partners as MCT has relied heavily on Kalmar straddle carrier technology right from day one of operations.

According to  Kalmar, the hybrid units can cut fuel consumption by up to 40% compared to equivalent diesel-powered machines.

Andrea Agostinelli, President of the Port Authority, said that with the arrival of 18 straddle carriers, soon to be followed by two additional state-of-the-art STS cranes, MCT continues to focus attention on sustainable development and growth aligning with the promises made by the company at the launchinf of its business.

MCT handled approximately 2.3 million TEU in the first seven months of this year, marking an 11.9% increase in port traffic compared to the same period last year.

The arrival of 18 new straddle carriers at the Port of Gioia Tauro follows the recent inauguration of the West Quay at the port in July 2024. Agostinelli, who attended the ceremony, highlighted the strategic importance of the West Quay in diversifying port services and enhancing the port’s role beyond its traditional container transshipment and automotive gateway. The new quay enables ship repair services, particularly benefiting MSC, and is expected to create new jobs in ship repair and systems engineering.
