The Pembroke Dock Marine development project in Wales was officially launched on 21 August, establishing a multi-purpose, future energy-ready hub focused on innovation and operational efficiency.

Pembroke Dock Marine is a £60 million project, funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal through the UK Government and Welsh Government, and private investment by the Port of Milford Haven that will help drive Wales’ ambition to become a global leader in clean energy.

The development has delivered new port infrastructure in Pembroke Dock alongside Wales’ Marine Energy Test Area (META) and a Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence whilst advancing the potential of the Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone – all to drive forward innovation and create new opportunities for industrial growth.

The project is made up of four elements:

  • The Marine Energy Test Area within the Milford Haven Waterway led by Marine Energy Wales, enables technology developers to test their marine energy devices close to their base of operation
  • The largest facility of its kind in the world, a 90 square km Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone delivered by Wave Hub Limited will enable the deployment of future energy-generating technologies, including floating wind
  • Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence – a technology, innovation and research centre delivered by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult
  • Redevelopment of land at Pembroke Dock, led by the Port of Milford Haven, to deliver the infrastructure needed by the industry as it continues to mature

The Port of Milford Haven says the project aims to attract the attention of global renewable energy investors and developers and provide a strategic platform for the ambition of the Milford Haven Energy Cluster and, more recently, the successful Celtic Freeport bid.
