YILPORT Puerto Bolívar inaugurates Berth 6 and a new container yard in Ecuador.
Puerto Bolívar is in the province of El Oro, in southern Ecuador. YILPORT LATAM announced the inauguration of Container Berth 6 and the new container yard at the terminal on July 31, 2024. YILPORT LATAM has invested over US$400m in the terminal, including six new STS cranes and 18 RTGs from Mitsui E&S.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa Azin; the Minister of Public Works, Roberto Luque; and the President of the Machala Chamber of Commerce, Luis Aguilar, among other dignitaries.
Alfredo Jurado von Buchwald, Regional General Manager of YILPORT LATAM, said the Berth 6 project “represents a crucial advance in our modernisation and expansion strategy. The total projected investment for the concession contract will be more than USD 750 million in the next 40 years.”
In 2023, Puerto Bolívar handled 250,000 TEUs, with bananas and copper concentrate being the main products. The Berth 6 project will increase the quay by 450m and expand the yard to reach a capacity of 1m TEU per year. Additionally, the depth of the access channel has been increased to 14.5 meters, with plans to reach 16.5 meters in 2025.
The inauguration also included the laying of the first stone for a new automated gate system, plus 20,000 square meters of refrigerated warehouse and control systems.
YILPORT is developing the port into a multipurpose port to handle cargo from the region, including northern Peru, in competition with other ports in Ecuador, including ICTSI’s terminal in Guayaquil.
