The Adria Port development in Trieste, overseen by Hungary, will advance with quaying work, aiming to boost capacity by 300,000 TEU annually.

The development of Adria Port, a multimodal terminal in the port of Trieste overseen by the Hungarian government, will move a step closer to completion by the end of next year. Construction for the partial quaying of the Noghere terminal is scheduled to start on 2 September 2024 and is expected to be finished by 31 December 2025.

The quaying work will create a dock 350 metres long and 11 metres deep, as reported by Shipping Italy. Additionally, dredging operations will be carried out, and new road connections will be established. Once the project is operational, the terminal is anticipated to handle an additional 300,000 TEU annually.

Hungary will be the primary beneficiary of the new terminal, with rail freight playing a key role. Being a landlocked country, Hungary decided to build a terminal to gain access to the sea, specifically the Adriatic. The terminal will cover an area of 34 hectares, including the Aquilinia station, which will soon be equipped with four tracks suitable for 750-metre-long trains to serve the Adria Port terminal.

The total investment for constructing the new terminal is estimated to be around 200 million euros. The Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, which manages the port of Trieste, will contribute 45 million euros, while the Hungarian government will fund the remainder. Operations are expected to commence as early as 2026, with plans to accommodate container traffic, general cargo, and Ro-Ro traffic.
