The company’s port terminals and logistics center received I-REC certificates verifying use of renewable energy for 100% of their electricity consumption.
Chilean port service operator SAAM Terminals announced that its terminals in San Antonio, Antofagasta, San Vicente, and Corral, along with the Puerto Montt logistics center, have reduced their carbon footprint in 2023 by 41% when compared to 2021.
The reduction is ascribed to switching to 100% renewable energy for their electricity consumption, preventing an estimated emission of 10,522 tons of CO2—equivalent to the emissions of 2,290 average automobiles.
“An important part of our sustainability strategy is to move forward towards more eco-friendly operations. Year after year we strive to improve our processes: powering our operations with renewable energy certified with I-RECs is proof of that commitment,” said SAAM Terminals’ VP of Sustainability and Communications, Cristina Schmidt.
I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificates) are an international mechanism used to promote and verify the use of renewable energy. They are issued by the International REC Standard, an organisation that establishes global standards for monitoring, issuing and trading REC certificates.
During 2023, SAAM Terminals’ operations were powered by energy from Enel’s Rapel hydroelectric power plant, one of Chile’s main hydroelectric plants.
As part of its environmental strategy, SAAM has made a strategic commitment for 2030 focusing on three areas: circular economy, GHG emissions and eco-water balance. Specifically, the company aims to reduce waste to final disposal by 25%, cut GHG emissions by 35% and reduce industrial water use by 45% by 2030.
More container terminal concessions are expected to change hands as integrated companies look to match their terminal portfolios to their wider supply chain strategy, while at the same time spreading the risk from supply chain disruptions.
