The Port of New York New Jersey is spending US$197.6m to reconstruct berths 10 to 12 at Port Newark.

Berths 10-12 are public berths located behind the Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT). They were used for bulk, general cargo and project cargo but have been out of commission since September 2021 due to structural safety concerns.

The Port of NY/NJ has now approved a project to renovate 1,050 ft of berth, restore berths 10-12 to modern design standards and resume their full operation. To increase the loading capacity of the quay structure and provide a 75-year design life the port has opted to demolish and reconstruct the existing structure.

The existing concrete deck, timber piles and bulkhead wall that make up the wharf structure will all be demolished and removed. In their place, a new wharf structure will be built on the same footprint using a steel pipe pile-supported high-level wharf platform built to modern design standards.

In a separate development, the port has approved $5m in funds for planning work for the next stage of expansion of the ExpressRail Elizabeth intermodal terminal at the Port Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal.

This is the intermodal facility that sits between Maher Terminals and APM Terminals Elizabeth. The next expansion will increase the number of rail tracks from 10 to 18. ExpressRail Elizabeth is operated by Millenium Rail, a joint venture between APM Terminals and Maher Terminals.
