Contecon Guayaquil S.A. (CGSA), the Ecuadorian division of International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), has entered into a partnership with COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers. Under the new agreement, CGSA will manage the handling of COSCO’s general cargo ships at the Port of Guayaquil over the next three years.

COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers, a division of China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited, operates and manages a fleet of over 100 vessels including multipurpose and heavy lift ships, semi-submersible vessels, and carriers for automobiles, logs, and asphalt.

ICTSI said the move was in line with CGSA’s objectives to expand its client base and consolidate the Port of Guayaquil’s position as Ecuador’s main logistics hub. CGSA has handled six COSCO vessels since the beginning of the year and anticipates at least one vessel per month moving forward.

“Our commitment to innovation, outstanding customer service, and sustainable development in the port sector is stronger than ever. Moreover, our handling of project cargo plays a crucial role in supporting major investment projects across the country, significantly boosting economic growth and advancing regional port infrastructure,” said Javier Lancha, CGSA chief executive officer.

In March 2007, ICTSI was granted a 20-year operating concession for the Container and Multipurpose Terminals at the Port of Guayaquil by the port authority, Autoridad Portuaria de Guayaquil (APG). Subsequently, in May, a formal contract was signed between APG and Contecon Guayaquil S.A., ICTSI’s local operating unit. The terminal, managed by Contecon Guayaquil S.A., handles various types of cargo, including containerised, general, and bulk shipments.
