Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has secured US$ 23 million from Florida legislators for crane upgrades. The port plans to use the funding to purchase a new STS crane for the port’s Talleyrand Marine Terminal (TMT) as well as the refurbishment of existing cranes at the port’s terminals.

JAXPORT said that the new crane will be bought from Liebherr Crane Company. The port did not disclose the expected time of arrival of the third crane. The funding was appropriated by the Florida Legislature during the past legislative session and approved by Governor Ron DeSantis.

TMT handles a diverse range of cargo, including containerised freight, automobiles, breakbulk, and liquid bulk products. The terminal features 4,780 linear feet of berthing space, and it is equipped with three post-Panamax and three Panamax container cranes. It has over 700,000 square feet of warehousing and an on-dock intermodal container transfer facility, offering direct access to CSX and Norfolk Southern rail services.

“I am proud to present JAXPORT with another substantial investment to update and modernise its system of container cranes,” said Florida House Speaker Paul Renner. “As the largest container port in the state, continued investments in container cranes are important to keep Florida’s ports competitive as a global gateway. This US$ 23 million will secure a new container crane and make critical updates to existing ones.”

“We are grateful to Governor Ron DeSantis, Speaker Paul Renner, Senate President Passidomo and the entire Florida Legislature for their longstanding support of JAXPORT,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “As our state’s population continues to grow, modernising our crane fleet allows us to maintain efficiencies while building on our ability to grow cargo volumes and related jobs.”

Over the last two years, JAXPORT has won US$ 53 million from the Florida legislature to support its multi-year initiative to upgrade and maintain its crane fleet. The port currently has two STS cranes on order from Liebherr, scheduled for delivery in spring 2025. In August 2023, JAXPORT won US$ 30 million to purchase the two cranes, which are intended for the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The terminal is operated by SSA Marine, which had purchased all of its STS cranes from ZPMC. However, as reported by WCN at the time, since the two new cranes were being purchased and owned by the port directly, the port authority opted for another supplier. The decision coincided with the recent national security fears over ZPMC’s links to the Chinese Communist Party.

The two cranes have a SWL of 65t, outreach of 51.2m, backreach of 25m and lifting height of 56m.

JAXPORT is Florida’s largest container port and one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports.
