Konecranes has secured an order from CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal Co. in Taiwan for five hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes. The terminal launched operations in 2021, following a 20-year terminal lease extension agreement signed between CMA CGM and Taiwan International Ports Corporation.

The RTGs utilise a battery for all operations and capture braking energy back to the battery, extending the pure electric operation time. A small diesel genset is used to charge the battery.

Each machine is fitted with an ergonomic cabin and four Smart Features aimed at raising efficiency and reducing operator fatigue. These include Auto-Steering, which creates virtual rails for the RTG to help the operator keep the crane on a straight drive path, followed by Auto-Positioning which places the spreader over the correct container slot. The features also include Stack Collision Prevention, which monitors the container stack with laser scanners whenever the trolley is in motion, slowing down the trolley when the spreader or container approaches a container target slot, and finally, Auto-TOS (Terminal Operating System) Reporting, which counts each crane’s moves, maps the position of every container and interfaces directly with the TOS.

This RTG type does not have Active Load Control, but it has electrical anti-sway. Konecranes told WorldCargo News that these RTGs can be used with remote operation, but cannot be fully automated. They have a lifting capacity of 40lt and can handle 30 containers per hour.

“CMA CGM uses Konecranes container handling equipment all over the world. This new order will ensure a long and productive future for their container handling operations in Taiwan, and it underlines the strength of our relationship and their confidence in our technology. Our modern container handing technology continues to generate interest wherever it is implemented,” says Jerry Fann, Sales Director, Port Solutions, Konecranes.

Konecranes said the hybrid RTGs are scheduled for delivery in mid-2025. The latest order comes on the back of a similar one Konecranes won from CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal last year, which included the supply seven hybrid Konecranes Noell RTGs to its container terminal in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The company said that its hybrid RTGs are becoming more popular worldwide, particularly in the US.
