Hamburg-headquartered bulk and tank container logistics specialist The HOYER Group has selected Netherlands-based enterprise software provider Rappit to build a “next-generation Transportation Management System (TMS) powered by the Rappit Suite.”

In making the announcement HOYER stressed that one of its “core competencies is thinking ahead”, and its strategic objectives include continuous improvement to optimise services and ensure operational excellence. “To achieve this, the company’s existing TMS systems will be replaced by a future-ready system that allows HOYER to think ahead and maintain its leadership position in the industry,” HOYER said.

The new TMS will be built by Rappit. “In close collaboration with HOYER, Rappit will work to realise a future-ready TMS on Google Cloud, powered by the Rappit Suite, consisting of Rappit Developer for high productivity coding, Rappit Composer for no-code apps & workflows, and Rappit Undoc for intelligent document processing,” HOYER said.

Rappit has already developed TMSs for transport operators including Verhoek Europe and tank container operator NewPort Tank Containers. Each of these systems is “tailor made” for the individual customer and Rappit is taking the same approach with HOYER.

“Leveraging a user-centric approach and agile methodology, HOYER and Rappit are working together as one team to develop a scalable system enabled for artificial intelligence and big data based on Google Cloud’s innovative and industry-leading technology.

“The new TMS covers HOYER´s transport processes. Comprising over 10 modules, including Masterdata, Equipment & Products, and Finance & Billing, the system integrates with more than 15 internal systems and will be used by 2000 users across the globe,” HOYER said in a statement.

Conventional wisdom is that in-house or custom enterprise software development is more expensive and risky than off-the-shelf applications. However, the emergence of ‘low-code’ platforms challenges this assumption. Rappit uses a modular architecture and pre-built components to support rapid prototyping. It claims this approach can accelerate development productivity by up to a factor of four compared to building an entire product with custom coding.

Furthermore, Rappit offers a “you build it you own it” licensing model where the customer owns applications and can support them independently with the export of app source code to Gitlab (which, unlike GitHub, can be hosted on in-house servers and not the cloud).

Björn Smidt, Head of Business Systems, HOYER Group, said: “HOYER made the strategic choice to go for a custom TMS because we want a differentiating system that fits HOYER’s specific needs and unique selling points. In an ever-changing world HOYER strengthens its leadership position with an agile system supporting HOYER’s business.”

Stefan Haverkock, Director IT & Digital, HOYER Group, added: “We chose Rappit for their strong domain knowledge building multiple Transportation Management Systems. They have a proven application development suite for building business-critical systems. HOYER seeks opportunities to further strengthen its position as a digital pioneer and deliver even more value to our customers”.

“We are proud to support HOYER with our expertise, products and team to realise an intelligent TMS on Google Cloud that is unique in the industry,” said Ardjan Baan, CEO, Rappit. “Based on our experience with application modernisation for logistics companies, we are not just replacing their legacy systems but continuously looking for ways to make their operations smarter by applying innovations such as artificial intelligence.”
