In August, the Port of Valencia (Valenciaport) handled 6.3 million tonnes of goods, representing a 2.56% rise compared to the same month in 2023. Container movement also improved, with the port processing 468,059 TEU, an 18.92% year-on-year increase. Valenciaport saw a notable rise in exports, with bulk goods increasing by 4.73% and containerised goods by 18.85%.

However, despite this month’s growth, the year-on-year balance for the past twelve months indicates a slight decline of 0.65%. Conversely, the cumulative export total for the year has improved, showing an overall growth of 1.38% since the beginning of the year.

“As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, Valenciaport is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in maritime commerce,” the port said.

The port stated that the ports of the Red Sea, the Baltic, and the Mediterranean have seen the largest increase in traffic with Valenciaport so far in 2024. Between January and August, the volume of containers exchanged between the Valencian docks and the main ports of the Red Sea grew by +65.36%; with the Baltic countries by +59.71% and with the Mediterranean countries by +34.32%.

Valenciaport continues to rely heavily on China, the United States, Italy, and Turkey as its primary trading partners, having exchanged over 16 million tonnes of goods with these countries so far this year, including 5.29 million tonnes with China, 4.63 million tonnes with Italy, 3.63 million tonnes with the United States, and 2.93 million tonnes with Turkey. Additionally, the port’s emerging role as a distribution centre for global import/export traffic has led to significant increases in trade with Greece and Saudi Arabia, with exchanges rising by 61.77% and 50.39%, respectively.

Overall, and in the first eight months of 2024, 53,911,681 tonnes of goods have passed through the terminals managed by the Port Authority of Valencia (5.67% more than the previous year). Of these, 4.16 million tonnes were bulk cargo, 10.36 million tonnes were non-containerised general cargo and 39.37 million tonnes were containerised cargo.
