Rijeka Gateway, a joint venture between Maersk’s APM Terminals and ENNA Logic, has assembled and uprighted its first rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane, showcasing Maersk’s distinctive blue colour in preparation for terminal operations. The terminal in Rijeka, Croatia, which is slated to begin operations in 2025, will feature over 60 pieces of electric container handling equipment, including four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, 15 RTGs, two rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes, 28 electric terminal tractors, and 14 electric vehicles.

Liebherr is supplying the 15 eRTGs and two eRMGs, all of which will be operated using Remote Operator Stations (ROS). The eRTGs are powered by electric busbar technology and feature drive-in auto-connect functionality. The cranes span 24.6m, have a lifting height of 1-over-6 and a SWL of 41t.

China’s ZPMC has already dispatched two STS cranes for the terminal, which are set to arrive later this year.

The remotely controlled container terminal is targeting an annual capacity of 650,000 TEU, with as much as 95% of the equipment being electric and powered exclusively by renewable energy sources.

Rijeka Gateway has named its four new cranes after women who left an indelible mark on Rijeka and its surroundings with their work. The citizens of Rijeka had the chance to choose between nine candidates and, as voting concluded, most votes were won by Antonija Reljac, the symbol of the Grobnik milkmaids, Zora Matijević, a teacher who became a heroine of the Second World War, Ada Felice Rošić, the bearer of the post-war reconstruction of Rijeka, and Snježana Pejčić, the first Croatian medalist at the Summer Olympics.

The cranes will be installed on the future Square of Strong Women in the City of Rijeka, which, according to APM Terminals, will become a special part of the terminal. Due to security reasons and because it is a port area, the square will not be accessible to citizens, but Rijeka Gateway plans to regularly organise guided tours of the new symbol of strong women from Rijeka’s past and present.
