APM Terminals has secured a 15-year concession extension for its Aqaba terminal in Jordan.
APM Terminals has secured a 15-year extension of its concession in Aqaba, Jordan, where it has been operating in partnership with Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) since 2006. The new agreement, approved this week by the Cabinet in Amman, extends the concession until 2046 and will be formally signed at a later date in Jordan.
“This renewal marks the next steps of our future plans to upgrade the terminal in Aqaba, Jordan,” said Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals. He emphasised that the partnership would expand opportunities for creating a green corridor to enhance Jordan’s supply chains, while also focusing on job creation and upskilling employees to benefit the Kingdom.
As part of the extended partnership, APM Terminals has committed to a US$ 242 million investment aimed at reducing emissions and achieving net-zero targets by 2040. Current sustainability initiatives include solar energy integration, which has already helped reduce the terminal’s environmental impact.
The Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) recorded a throughput of over 898,000 TEU in 2023, a 5.4% increase compared to the previous year. APM Terminals said that operational improvements, such as the introduction of a new Operations Command Centre and advanced systems like the laser-based Truck Alignment System, have significantly enhanced efficiency at the terminal.
“This extension will propel ACT towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, solidifying its status as a leading regional port. By enhancing our logistics and supply chain, we are not only strengthening our national economy but also setting new benchmarks for environmental responsibility in the maritime industry. This next phase of our partnership embodies a shared vision for a prosperous and sustainable future, showcasing the power of strategic PPPs in driving economic growth and technological progress,” H.E. Hussein Safadi, CEO of ADC said.
As part of this extended partnership, US$ 500,000 will be invested in training programmes for Jordanian workers.
