CMA CGM Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with SUEZ, a Paris-based company specialising in circular waste management solutions, to establish a long-term industrial partnership on biomethane, a renewable fuel produced through waste recovery.

The MOU outlines three key areas of collaboration between CMA CGM and SUEZ aimed at promoting sustainable maritime transport. First, SUEZ will supply CMA CGM with up to 100,000t of biomethane per year by 2030, which the French container shipping major plans to use for its gas-powered ships. Second, the MOU establishes a joint investment structure with an initial funding of €100m for the development of biomethane production facilities, primarily located in Europe, to supply both CMA CGM Group and other industry players. Finally, the partnership will engage in joint research and development initiatives focused on designing innovative technologies for biofuel production, particularly via a hydrothermal gasification process.

The move is in line with CMA CGM Group’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. The company revealed that it has invested US$ 18b in orders for 131 vessels capable of using low-carbon energies (biomethane, biomethanol and synthetic fuels), which will be operational by 2028. CMA CGM Group is also working alongside energy providers to develop production facilities and supply chains for these fuels.

“The strategic partnership between CMA CGM and SUEZ, one of France’s leading players in the energy transition, marks a major step forward. It will enable us to support the biomethane sector dedicated to the shipping industry, while accelerating the decarbonisation of CMA CGM Group and guaranteeing our carbon neutrality trajectory by 2050. This project also strengthens our energy independence, a key asset for the sovereignty of France and Europe,” Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, said.

“I am delighted to be working with the CMA CGM Group, a key player in maritime transport. Together, we are going to develop circular solutions that will contribute to the decarbonisation of this strategic sector in Europe. This partnership for biomethane production is a further illustration of SUEZ’s ambition to turn waste into new resources for the energy transition of the transport sector,” Sabrina Soussan, Chairman and CEO of SUEZ, said.

SUEZ said that in 2023, its circular solutions helped clients avoid 6.4mt of CO2 emissions. Specifically, SUEZ converts 5mt of waste into energy annually and produces 382 GWh of biomethane in the same year.
