Growing buzz around ammonia
NewsMSC and Seaspan are advancing their projects to develop ammonia-powered container ships.
Seaspan books construction of six 13,600 TEU vessels at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.
Hong Kong-based container ship lessor Seaspan Corporation has placed an order for six 13,600 TEU container vessels with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
The ships, independently designed by Hudong-Zhonghua, have been described by CSSC “as environmentally friendly container carriers” as they will be fitted with scrubbers and energy saving devices enabling the ships to meet future “green fuel modification needs”.
They have a maximum capacity of 14,132 TEU and feature 2,000 refrigerated container spaces. The newly ordered series is expected to be completed and delivered between 2026 and 2028.
The deal will be settled in Chinese RMB rather than US dollars, a move that CSSC claims will help Hudong-Zhonghua mitigate exchange rate risks, enhance profitability, and improve market competitiveness. With this order, Hudong-Zhonghua has secured over US$ 10 billion in newbuilding contracts this year.
During the first half of 2024, Seaspan Corporation entered into shipbuilding contracts for 27 new dual-fuel container ships as part of its ongoing fleet expansion programme. The vessels, which range between 9,000 and 17,000 TEU, are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028, according to a recent filing by its parent company, Atlas Corporation, with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
As of 30 June 2024, the company had 41 vessels under construction.
