STS cranes at Shenzhen’s Chiwan Terminal reach new heights

News

Shenzhen’s Chiwan Terminal boosts capacity with higher cranes as it sets sights on handling vessels up to 24,000 TEU.

ZPMC has launched a crane raising project at Shenzhen’s Chiwan Container Terminal (CCT), one of the port’s four major container terminals. Tucked on Shenzhen’s Nantou Peninsula and just 20 nautical miles from Hong Kong, CCT stands as a vital “sea gateway” connecting China’s Pearl River Delta with ports worldwide.

The project is raising four STS cranes from 45m to 51m, positioning the terminal to handle ultra-large container ships with capacities reaching 24,000 TEU. With this upgrade, CCT aims to expand its efficiency to meet rising demands of Shenzhen’s growing port traffic. The project follows the recent completion of the elevation and upgrade of three STS cranes at the terminal by ZPMC.

“This upgrade will significantly enhance the terminal’s handling capacity and strengthen its overall competitiveness,” ZPMC said.

ZPMC has several systems in its armoury to lift the upper structure of a crane during a crane raise product. These include a proprietary system that raises the crane off its own sill beams, to avoid putting any extra weight on the dock outside of the crane rails.

The work in Shenzhen highlights that crane raise projects are still around, but they are not nearly as common as they were a decade ago. ZPMC completed its first crane raise job in 2012 and by mid 2018 had raised 100 STS cranes.
